Gophers Dig Hole, Suffer First Loss Since Fall
HUNTINGDON, Pa. Goucher put itself in a hole against Juniata today by coming out on top in only one doubles match. Things didn't get any better in singles play where the Gophers went 2-4 and, as a result, they were forced to accept their first loss in six matches this spring, a 6-3 setback to the Eagles, who took over sole possession of first place in the Landmark Conference with the win.
Only Scott-Giry, Bergman Emerge Victorious in Singles Play
HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Goucher put itself in a hole against
Juniata today by coming out on top in only one doubles match.
Things didn't get any better in singles play where the Gophers went
2-4 and, as a result, they were forced to accept their first loss
in six matches this spring, a 6-3 setback to the Eagles, who took
over sole possession of first place in the Landmark Conference with
the win.
Goucher's No. 1 doubles team of Carly Heinz (Scotch
Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Tanya
Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) prevented the Eagles
(10-4, 3-0 Landmark) from a sweep of the doubles matches as they
earned an 8-6 victory over Amanda Fontana and Katie Healy.
Fontana and Healy were both victorious in singles play, however:
at No. 1, Fontana came back from being a set down to defeat Cooley
6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2; at No. 2, Healy prevailed in a tiebreaker to
capture the first set and went on to down Heinz 7-6 (4), 6-1.
The two wins for the Gophers (9-3, 1-1 Landmark) in singles play
were by Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross
School) at No. 5 and Mara Bergman (Summit,
N.J./Summit) at No. 6. Scott-Giry knocked off Lauren Perow
6-4, 6-2 to improve to 10-1 in singles play in 2008-09, and Bergman
notched her team-high 12th singles win of of the season by beating
Katie Steinour 7-5, 6-1.
The loss snapped a six-match winning streak for head coach Sally
Baum's squad that began during the fall portion of the 2008-09
schedule.
