Gophers Trip Up Cardinals, Move Up in Landmark
TOWSON, Md. Winning five of the six singles matches more than put Goucher over the top against Catholic today. It provided head coach Sally Baum's Gophers with a 7-2 triumph over the Cardinals their first victory in the all-time series between the two rivals since 2005.
Goucher's First Victory in Rivalry with Catholic Since 2005
TOWSON, Md. – Winning five of the six singles matches more
than put Goucher over the top against Catholic today. It provided
head coach Sally Baum's Gophers with a 7-2 triumph over the
Cardinals – their first victory in the all-time series
between the two rivals since 2005.
In addition, the win elevated the Gophers into a tie with Scranton for third place in the Landmark Conference.
Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) provided the Gophers (10-4, 2-2 Landmark) with one of their two wins in doubles play. They pinned an 8-2 setback on Mary Wargo and Sarah Luffy at No. 2.
At No. 3, Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) were 8-6 winners over Allison Tontz and Seda Ambartsumian from Catholic.
Catholic (3-9, 0-5 Landmark) picked up its lone singles win at No. 1 where Rachel Tenuta got by Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2, Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) defeated Caitlin Dunn 6-2, 6-3.
Attarha turned back Wargo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, Pulupa came out on top of Luffy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, and Scott-Giry pounded Tontz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 6, Bergman prevailed in a super-tiebreaker to complete a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7) victory over Ambartsumian.
