Gophers Swat Yellow Jackets in First 2008-09 Match
TOWSON, Md. Just as it did three other times in the past four seasons, Goucher opened its 2008-09 campaign today with a resounding victory over Waynesburg. The Gophers won five of the six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches on the way to an 8-1 triumph over the visiting Yellow Jackets (0-3).
Cooley Prevails at No. 1 Singles, Part of Win with Scott-Giry in Doubles
TOWSON, Md. – Just as it did three other times in the past
four seasons, Goucher opened its 2008-09 campaign today with a
resounding victory over Waynesburg. The Gophers won five of the six
singles matches and swept the three doubles matches on the way to
an 8-1 triumph over the visiting Yellow Jackets (0-3).
The winner at first singles for the Gophers (1-0) was Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield). She defeated Waynesburg's Laura Garcia 7-5, 6-1.
Goucher's Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Waynesburg's Alexis Horochak split the first two sets at second singles before Pulupa earned a 7-5, 4-8, 1-0 (10-5) victory by prevailing in a super-tiebreaker.
Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) defeated Waynesburg's Jessica Mally 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Also posting straight-set wins in singles play for head coach Sally Baum's Gophers were Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) at No. 4 and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) at No. 5.
The same five players who accounted for Goucher's five wins in singles play were also part of one of the three victories during doubles competition: Cooley and Scott-Giry downed Garcia and Jessica Kody, 8-1, at No. 1, Attarha and Pulupa polished off Horochak and Malley, 8-3, at No. 2, and Bergman and Jacqui Lamer (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) topped Kelsey Diesel and Melissa Faulkner, 8-2, at No. 3.
