Freshman Prevails at No. 5 to Clinch 5-4 Win
TOWSON, Md. A 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles by freshman Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) gave Goucher the point it needed to clinch a 5-4 triumph over visiting Neumann this afternoon.
Cooley, Scott-Giry Record 8-1 Victory at No. 1 Doubles
TOWSON, Md. – A 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles by freshman
Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) gave Goucher
the point it needed to clinch a 5-4 triumph over visiting Neumann
this afternoon.
Bergman, who is now 3-0 in singles play for the Gophers in 2008-09, trailed Michelle Steward, 5-4, in the second set before winning the final three games of her match.
The Knights (5-5) led 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play. Goucher's only win in doubles was at No. 1 where Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) defeated Allison Trout and Courtney Hartel, 8-1.
Cooley and Scott-Giry were also victorious in singles play for the Gophers. At No. 1, Cooley knocked off Trout 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 4, Scott-Giry pinned a 6-0, 6-1 setback on Lindsey Ravior.
Goucher's other win during singles competition was by Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) at No. 3 where she polished off Hartel 6-1, 6-2.
