Cooley, Pulupa Place Fourth in Singles Flights
TOWSON, Md. Goucher's Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) both finished in fourth place in their respective flights today as the Goucher Invitational wrapped up.
Attarha, Bergman Go 2-1 to Finish Fifth in Respective Flights
TOWSON, Md. – Goucher's Tanya Cooley (Arlington,
Va./Wakefield) and Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg,
Md./Richard Montgomery) both finished in fourth place in
their respective flights today as the Goucher Invitational wrapped
up.
Cooley and Pulupa were the only Goucher players to win first-round matches and advances to the semifinals in singles play. Cooley, who was competing in Flight I, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stevenson's Samatha Rasnake, but suffered a 6-4, 7-6 (6) loss to Sarah Eisel from Frostburg St. in the semifinals. Pulupa reached the Flight III semifinals with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Richard Stockton's Shelly Sai, but then was denied a spot in the finals when she was handed a 6-3, 6-1 setback by Ashley Bowie of Gwynedd-Mercy.
Cooley had to settle for fourth place when she lost to Richard Stockton's Kristianne Fernandez 6-3, 6-1; Hillary Lasher from Penn St. Erie beat out Pulupa for third place by taking her 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Goucher's two other entrants in the singles competition won their matches today to capture fifth place. In Flight II, Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) completed her 2-1 run through the tournament by defeating Vicki Stafford from Frostburg St. 6-3, 6-3, and in Fight IV, Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) also went 2-1, ending with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Theresa Mills from Frostburg St.
Both of the doubles teams Goucher placed in the tournament – Hilary Fast (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) in Flight I and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Ilana Gross (Cornwall, N.J./The Strom King School) in Flight II – both finished in seventh place.
