Landmark Conference setback to Drew.
Both players who prevailed during the singles competition today for the Gophers (6-4, 0-2 Landmark) had to win a tiebreaker; one even had to come out on top in a matchbreaker. Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) won for the fourth time in five matches at No. 5 singles this season when she finished off Drew's Laura Ferguson 6-1, 7-6 (4).
At No. 6, Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) was involved in a tiebreaker to decide the first set and then, after Erica Fredrickson of the Rangers came back to win the second set and force a matchbreaker, Stephaich completed her 7-6 (6), 4-6, 1-0 (10) victory.
At first singles, Drew's Vivian Peng defeated Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) 6-0, 6-0; at No. 2, Michelle Gbelama of the Rangers got past Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6).
The Rangers (3-0, 2-0 Landmark) dropped only five games in winning the three doubles matches.
