TOWSON, Md. — Goucher got back above .500 thanks to a 7-2 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) today that featured five wins in singles play.
The Gophers, who had dropped five straight matches since a 9-0 triumph over McDaniel back in October, got off on the right foot by picking up two wins in doubles play. At No. 1, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) recorded an 8-1 victory over Michelle Compton and Chelsea Bradcovich, and at No. 3, Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) downed Kathleen Ramsey and Marie Rau, 8-5.
Lee became the first Goucher player to reach nine wins in singles play in 2009-10 by defeating Shelby Mullennix of the Seahawks 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, but Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Maxwell both picked up their eighth singles wins of the season: Bergman disposed of Beth Handy 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 and Maxwell knocked off Bradcovich 7-6 (6), 6-2 at No. 5.
The Gophers (7-6) also picked up points with wins by Pulupa at No. 1 and Casey at No. 4. Pulupa came out on top of Compton 6-1, 6-1; Casey downed Rau 6-3, 6-3.
The Seahawks (10-11) came up with only one win in singles play. It was a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Ramsey over Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) at No. 6.
