Gophers Pick Up First Landmark Win of 2009-10
TOWSON, Md. By winning two of the three doubles matches and prevailing four times during the singles competition, Goucher was able to register its first victory of the 2009-10 season over a Landmark Conference opponent today. The Gophers defeated Catholic, 6-3.
Pulupa, Lee Prevail at No. 1 Doubles, Succeed in Singles Play

TOWSON, Md. — By winning two of the three doubles matches
and prevailing four times during the singles competition, Goucher
was able to register its first victory of the 2009-10 season over a
Landmark Conference opponent today. The Gophers defeated Catholic,
6-3.
The two wins in doubles play were accomplished by Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) at No. 1 and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) at No. 3. Pulupa and Lee came out on top against Marjorie Selinger and Isti Kuhn, 8-5; Maxwell and Casey downed Rosemary Lee Montani and Katie Johnson, 8-4.
Ahead 2-1 heading into the singles competition, the Gophers (8-7, 1-4 Landmark) added straight-set wins by Pulupa at No. 1, Casey at No. 4 and Maxwell at No. 5. Pulupa polished off Selinger 6-1, 6-1, Casey turned back Allison Tontz 7-5, 6-4, and Maxwell was victorious over Kasia Zak 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Goucher's remaining point in singles play was earned by Lee at No. 3. She came back from being down a set to defeat Gretchen Coombs 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
By knocking off the Cardinals (6-11, 0-5 Landmark), the Gophers guaranteed themselves of finishing the season at no worse than .500.
