TOWSON, Md. — Goucher put a scare into visiting Scranton today in its final match of the 2009-10 season before the Royals won four times in singles play to pull out a 5-4 Landmark Conference victory.
The Gophers (8-8, 1-5 Landmark) came out on top in two of the three doubles matches. Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) were paired together at No. 2 and they recorded an 8-5 win over Kelly Costello and Moira McGinn; at No. 3, Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) prevailed in a tiebreaker to complete a 9-8 (2) triumph over Caitlin Ehly and Lindsay Ward.
Scranton's only win in doubles play was at No. 1 where Deirdre Wylie and Danielle Wylie handled Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), 8-3.
Goucher needed to win three singles matches to complete its mission against the Royals (9-6, 5-1 Landmark), but could come up with only a pair. One was by Lee, who finished with a sparkling 12-3 record in singles play as a freshman by pinning a 6-3, 6-0 setback on McGinn at No. 4.
At No. 6, Maxwell dominated Scranton's Beth Lappin to the tune of 6-0, 6-0.
