TOWSON, Md. – A sweep of the doubles matches provided
Goucher with a 3-0 advantage over Messiah this afternoon that the
Gophers turned into a 7-2 triumph over the Falcons (1-1) by winning
four of the six singles matches.
Whether the lead was 2-1 or 3-0 at the conclusion of doubles play hinged on the outcome at No. 1 where Goucher's Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) were knotted up at 8-8 with Messiah's Stacey Clark and Kristen Chen after 16 games, bringing a tiebreaker into play. Pulupa and Lee prevailed in the tiebreaker, 7-4, completing Goucher's sweep of the three doubles matches.
The first two singles matches to go final provided the Gophers (2-0) with the two points they needed to earn the overall victory: at No. 3, Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) knocked off Messiah's Annie Gotchel 6-2, 6-2; at No. 4, Lee was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Sarah Thow.
Goucher's other two wins in singles play were by Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) at No. 1 and Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) at No. 6. Heinz defeated Clark 6-4, 6-4, while Zick fought off Chen 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
