Heinz Stays Unbeaten at No. 1 Singles for Goucher

TOWSON, Md. – Goucher concluded doubles play with a 2-1 lead
over Waynesburg and then proceeded to prevail in all six singles
matches today to earn an 8-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets
(1-3).
Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) all improved to 3-0 in singles play so far this season as the Gophers (3-0) were pulling off their sweep. Heinz, competing at No. 1, pinned a 6-0, 6-1 setback on Waynesburg's Rebekah Reyes, while Bergman and Lee remained undefeated at their spots in the middle of Goucher's singles lineup: Bergman defeated Allie Horochak 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 3 and Lee turned back Jessica Kody 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) polished off Waynesburg's Stephanie Ball 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and two freshmen accounted for Goucher's remaining two victories during singles competition: Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jess Mally at No. 5 and Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) outlasted Kelsey Diesel 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 6.
Goucher held the upper hand at the conclusion of doubles play thanks to an 8-2 wins by Pulupa and Lee over Reyes and Ball at No. 1 and Heinz and Marina Sterngold (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) over Kody and Diesel at No. 2.
