TOWSON, Md. – It took a team that was also undefeated to
hand Goucher its first loss of the 2009-10 season. Lebanon Valley
turned a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play today into a
7-2 victory over the Gophers by winning five of the six singles
matches.
Goucher's lone win out of the three doubles matches was at No. 2 where Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) prevailed 7-3 in a tiebreaker to come out on top, 9-8.
The Gophers (5-1) picked up their point in singles play at No. 4 where Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Lebanon Valley's Caitlin Bedford. The freshman is now undefeated through six singles matches this season.
Heinz and Bergman both took 5-0 singles records into today's match only to suffer their first 2009-10 setbacks: Heinz was beaten at No. 1 by Sarah Grodzinski 6-1, 6-1; Bergman, who was stationed at No. 3 in the Gophers' line-up, bowed to Tamera Lobb 6-4, 7-5.
Including their five wins today, the Flying Dutchmen (7-0) are 36-6 in singles play this season.
