Only One Set Goes Goucher's Way During Singles Competition
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — In the first of three matches Goucher is scheduled to play here during its Spring Break trip, head coach Sally Baum's squad took a 9-0 hit from Babson.
The Beavers (9-4) dominated doubles play, winning 24 of the 26 games that constituted the three matches. Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) represented Goucher at No. 1 and suffered an 8-1 loss to Rebecca Stone and Sarah Whitaker.
Pulupa and Stone met up again at first singles, with Stone coming out on top 6-0, 6-2. Whitaker was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Lee at No. 2.
The only set the Gophers (2-4) were able to win in six singles matches was by Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) at No. 6. She prevailed in the second set, but bowed to Caroline Hobert 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
