Pulupa, Bergman Pair Up for First Time, Suffer 8-2 Loss at No. 1
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — Goucher dropped its third straight match as the Gophers suffered a 9-0 loss to Geneseo in the second of three matches they are scheduled to play during their Spring Break trip here.
The Blue Knights (9-1) won 24 of the 32 games that constituted the three doubles matches. Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) were paired up in doubles play for the first time all season and they fell at No. 1 to Lucy Mehrabyan and Julia Passik, 8-2. At No. 2, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) were handed an 8-4 setback by Monica Vieth and Melissa Baker.
The No. 1 singles match pitted Pulupa against Vieth, who recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win. Lee dropped the first set at No. 2 to Mehrabyan, 6-0, and then retired after falling behind 3-0 in the second set.
Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) represented the Gophers (2-5) at No. 6 singles and put up a battle against Katie Talbot only to go down 6-2, 6-3.
