Trip to Puerto Rico Ends on Sour Note, 6-3 Setback

Gophers Add Just One Singles Win After Going 2-1 in Doubles Play

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — Goucher led 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play, but the Gophers dropped five of the six singles matches as they bowed to Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 6-3, in the last of their three Spring Break matches here.

Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) were paired up in doubles play for only the second time all season and they were registered an 8-4 victory at No. 1 over Gabriela Roddriguez and Christine Raymond. The other win for the Gophers (2-6) during doubles competition was by Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), who defeated Oczane Rivera and Ana Bonilla, 8-6.

Pulupa picked up her second win of the season in singles play by downing Rivera 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 1.

Bergman went three full sets at No. 2, but fell to Rodriguez 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. At No. 5, Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) took the first set from Bonilla, but eventually went down 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-2); at No. 6, Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) was beaten by Joanna Ortiz 7-5, 6-1.
