Lee, Casey Record Straight-Set Victories in Singles Play for Goucher
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher put a stop to its four-match losing streak by knocking off Susquehanna, 6-3, this afternoon in the first Landmark Conference match of the season for both teams.
The Gophers (3-6, 1-0 Landmark) were certainly in the driver's seat heading into the singles competition because they prevailed in all three doubles matches. Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) walked off the court with an 8-3 victory over Julia Lerner and Jessica Klinger at No. 1. At No. 2, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) registered an 8-4 win over Abby Hess and Kim Rogers; at No. 3, Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) topped Ellen Pulsinelle and Whitney Arcaro, 8-6.
Although the Crusaders (6-1, 0-1 Landmark) earned the point at No. 1 singles because Lerner came out on top against Pulupa, 7-6 (1), 6-3, Lee, Maxwell and Casey were all victorious in singles play for Goucher. Lee was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Hess at No. 2, Maxwell polished off Pulsinelle 7-6 (0), 4-6, 6-0 at No. 4 and Casey defeated Rogers 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.
