Bergman's Victory Seals Deal Against Defending Champions

Lee, Maxwell Prevail in Singles Play, Join Forces for Win at No. 2 Doubles

MADISON, N.J. — Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) came back from being down a set to prevail at No. 3 singles today, giving Goucher the point it needed to clinch a 5-4 victory over Drew, the defending Landmark Conference champions.

The Gophers went into singles play needing three wins to finish off the Rangers (2-5, 0-1 Landmark). They missed out at No. 1 singles as Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) forced a third set but eventually bowed to Sarit Ashkenazi 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) delivered one of the wins as she knocked off Drew's Sofia Madrigal 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2. Another one came from Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), who played at No. 4 for Goucher and defeated Erica Fredrickson 6-0, 6-0.

Bergman picked up the match-clinching fifth point for the Gophers (4-7, 2-0 Landmark) when she rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Christiane Toma.

Bergman joined forces with Pulupa at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-3 victory over Ashkenazi and Toma, giving the tandem at 4-1 record this season. Before their crucial wins in singles play, Lee and Maxwell pinned an 8-3 setback on Madrigal and Cristine Conde at No. 2 doubles.

Drew picked up its only point during the doubles competition at No. 3 where Chelsea Lipp and Rebecca Olderman got past Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School), 9-8 (0).
