Lee Prevails at No. 2 Singles, Teams Up with Maxwell for Win at No. 2 Doubles
HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Goucher moved into a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference by taking care of business against Juniata. The Gophers won five of the six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 triumph over the Eagles.
Even though Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) were beaten, 8-4, at No. 1 by Megan Phillips and Stacie Beegle, head coach Sally Baum's squad still held at 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) were victorious over Lauren Perow and Hilary Walsh, 9-7, at No. 2 and Jacqui Lamer (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) vanquished Laura Gregory and Rachel Adams, 8-2, at No. 3
The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for the Pulupa/Bergman pairing at No. 1 doubles for the Gophers (6-7, 3-0 Landmark), but both of them chalked up victories during the singles competition. Pulupa, competing at No. 1, pinned a 6-2, 6-2 setback on Phillips; Bergman came back from being down a set to defeat Perow 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 3.
Lee disposed of Beegle 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Maxwell topped Gregory 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Lamer turned back Tiereney Miller 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Eagles (5-10, 0-4 Landmark) picked up their only point during singles play at No. 5 where Walsh fought off Stephaich to earn a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Gophers now share first place in the Landmark Conference with Moravian. They are slated to face the Greyhounds at home on April 16.
