Lee, Casey Break Through with Wins for Goucher in Singles Play
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's modest three-match winning streak was halted today by Christopher Newport, which swept the three doubles matches and then took four of the six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 triumph over head coach Sally Baum's Gophers.
The Captains (13-4) allowed the Gophers to win only seven games during the doubles competition. At No. 1, Sarah Stafford and Marion Gloor turned back Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit), 8-4, and at No. 2, Kim Morrissett and Lauren Kelly defeated Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), 8-0.
Jacqui Lamer (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) represented Goucher at No. 3 doubles and bowed to Jodi Noland and Melisande Downs, 8-3.
The two victories for the Gophers (6-8) in singles play were by Lee at No. 2 and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) at No. 6. Lee pinned a 6-4, 6-4 setback on Kelly to raise her record this season at No. 2 singles to 3-3, while Casey polished off Jessica Clark 7-5, 6-2.
Stafford was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Pulupa at No. 1.
