6-3 Victory Over Cardinals Puts Gophers Back in Tie for First

Lee, Maxwell Improve to 4-0 Against Landmark Conference Opponents

TOWSON, Md. — The same four players who prevailed in singles play for Goucher today were also involved in the two doubles victories the Gophers picked up on the way to a 6-3 triumph over Catholic. The win moved head coach Sally Baum's squad back into a tie for first place with Moravian in the Landmark Conference.

The Gophers (7-9, 4-0 Landmark) came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead. At No. 1, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) turned back Marjorie Selinger and Elaina Sceusa, 8-2; at No. 2, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) defeated Andie Ingram and Isabel Tanco, 8-2.

Pulupa ran into Selinger again at No. 1 singles and came out on top 6-2, 6-3. Lee registered a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ingram at No. 2, Bergman polished off Sceusa 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Maxwell was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Ritamarie Holden at No. 4.

Lee and Maxwell are both 4-0 against Landmark Conference opponents in 2010-11.

The Cardinals (13-6, 2-2 Landmark) were able to salvage a win at No. 3 doubles and at fifth and sixth singles.
