Lee Picks Up Goucher's Only Point with 6-2, 6-4 Win at No. 2 Singles
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's 2010-11 season came to a sudden and surprising end today when the Gophers bowed at home to Scranton, 8-1, in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference postseason tournament.
The Gophers came in as the tournament's No. 1 seed but they were down 3-0 at the conclusion of doubles play. Despite being up 5-2 at one point, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) suffered an 8-5 setback to Stephanie Boccuzzi and Devon Cohen at No. 1.
Danielle Wylie and Elisha Connell were paired together at No. 2 for the fourth-seeded Royals (6-9) and they came out on top of Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), 8-5. Kelly Costello and Caitlin Ehly were 8-1 winners over Jacqui Lamer (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) and Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) at No. 3.
Costello's 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Lamer at No. 5 singles provided Scranton with a 4-0 lead in the match before Ehly defeated Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 to seal the outcome.
The Gophers (9-10) secured their only point of the match at No. 2 singles where Lee knocked off Connell 6-2, 6-4.
Boccuzzi bested Pulupa 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Cohen rallied from being down a set to get past Bergman 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11) at No. 3 and Wylie topped Maxwell at No. 4.
