TOWSON, Md. — After pulling off a sweep of the three doubles matches, Goucher prevailed in five of the singles matches to complete a convincing 8-1 season-opening triumph over Waynesburg today.
In the first of six matches head coach Sally Baum's Gophers are slated to play during the fall portion of their 2010-11 schedule, they had the visiting Yellow Jackets (1-1) in a 3-0 hole at the conclusion of doubles play. At No. 1, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) recorded an 8-3 win over Rebeka Reyes and Markie Gustafson; at No. 2, Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) turned back Jessica Kody and Kelsey Diesel, 8-6.
Pulupa, Lee, Bergman and Maxwell were responsible for four of the Gophers' five wins in singles play: Pulupa downed Reyes 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Lee knocked off Gustafson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, Bergman disposed of Kody 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Maxwell was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Diesel at No. 4.
The Yellow Jackets picked up their only point of the match at No. 5 singles, but freshman Ryan Derham (San Anselmo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) got the Gophers (1-0) back on the right track by dealing McDonald a 6-1, 6-0 setback at No. 6.
