Gophers Suffer Second 5-4 Setback in Span of Two Days

Lin Prevails at No. 2 Singles for Team-High 11th Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the second day in a row, Goucher was down 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play and head coach Sally Baum's squad couldn't overcome that deficit with a 3-3 split of the singles matches. The Gophers bowed to Christopher Newport by the same count of 5-4 this afternoon that they did to Scranton yesterday.

As they did against the Royals, Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) accounted for Goucher's only triumph during the doubles competition of today's match. They recorded an 8-6 win over Sarah Stafford and Marion Gloor.

The match that put the Captains (6-2) in the driver's seat was No. 3 doubles where Melisande Downs and Emily Draheim rallied for a 9-8 (7-2) victory over Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall).

Lin picked up her team-leading 11th singles win of the season by knocking off Kim Morrissett 6-2, 7-6 (3) at No. 2. Also victorious for the Gophers (5-4) in singles play were Maxwell at No. 5 and Casey at No. 6: Maxwell disposed of Angela Stallman 6-2, 7-5; Casey defeated Downs 6-4, 7-5.

Stafford came out on top of Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Straight-set wins by Gloor at No. 3 and Jodi Noland at No. 4 provided the Captains (6-2) with their remaining two points.
