Gophers Pin Resounding 9-0 Setback on Lions

Five of Six Singles Matches End 6-0, 6-0 in Goucher's Favor

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher swept the three doubles matches for only the fourth time all season this afternoon on the way to a resounding 9-0 triumph over Bryn Athyn.

Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) showed the way with an 8-2 victory over Beth Earle and Kateryna Grafska at No. 1. At No. 2, Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples) responded by turning back Holly Adams and Megan Reinprecht, 8-1; at No. 3, Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) defeated Emily Ball and Michaela Boyesen, 8-0.

In taking all six singles matches, the Gophers (9-5) allowed the Lions (0-2) to win only two games. Bergman was at No. 1 for the first time in 2011-12 and she topped Earle 6-0, 6-0. Maxwell moved up to No. 2 and ran her winning streak in singles play to seven matches by polishing off Grafska 6-0, 6-0.

Zick came out on top of Adams 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and the remaining matches all went 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) at No. 4, Ryan Derham (San Anselmo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) at No. 5 and Hanora Barron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) at No. 6.
