Gophers Remain in Hunt for Landmark Tournament Berth
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher remained in contention for a berth in the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament by handling Juniata, 6-3, this afternoon.
Among the four winners in singles play for the Gophers (11-6, 2-3 Landmark) was Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), who recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Heather Waring at No. 2. By prevailing in her 11th match in succession, the freshman improved to 18-1 in 2011-12, tying the school record for most singles wins in a season by a female tennis player.
Lin now shares the record with Betsy Weingarten, who won all 18 of the singles matches she played back in 1986-87.
Goucher also picked up points at No. 1 where Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) turned back Lisa Hauptman 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 where Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) topped Megan Phillips 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 6 where Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) defeated Hilary Walsh 6-2, 7-6 (2).
The Gophers came out of the doubles competition ahead 2-1. Bergman and Lin were partnered at No. 1 and they posted an 8-4 triumph over Phillips and Waring. At No. 2, Lee and Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples) took care of Hauptman and Cara Stough, 8-4.
The only doubles match won by the Eagles (6-9, 0-4 Landmark) was No. 3 where Stacie Beegle and Walsh knocked off Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Casey, 8-3.
