Freshman Makes All-Landmark Team in Singles, Doubles
MADISON, N.J. — Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) earned her way on to the 2012 All-Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Team for both her record-breaking performance at No. 2 in Goucher's singles line-up and for her contributions to the top doubles pairing head coach Sally Baum was able to put together.
The same seven head coaches who did the voting that produced the select squad revealed today also chose Lin as the conference's Rookie of the Year for her sport.
Through their balloting, the coaches came up with an All-Landmark first team and a second team, with each one consisting of six players being recognized for their performance in singles play during the 2011-12 season and three sets of two players who were deemed worthy of all-conference accolades for achievements in doubles competition.
Lin's spot on the first team for singles was a reward for going 20-1 as a freshman. She was used primarily at No. 2 where she went 15-1, but also picked up two wins at No. 3 and posted three additional victories during a tournament.
She is the first player in the history of Goucher's women's tennis program to win 20 singles matches in a season. She broke the former record of 18 by Betsy Weingarten in 1986-87 when she defeated Meg Kelly from Gettysburg 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 on April 19. Lin's only loss during the 2011-12 campaign was 7-5, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (9) to Breanne Phillips from Misericordia on Oct. 6, also at No. 2.
Lin was partnered with senior Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) to form one of the three doubles pairings that earned first-team All-Landmark recognition. They played together 13 times this season, exclusively at No. 1, and won nine times.
