Freshmen Account for Half of Goucher's Six Wins in Singles Play
WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Goucher prevailed in two of the three doubles matches before pulling off a sweep at singles on the way to a convincing 8-1 season-opening victory over Waynesburg this afternoon.
In the first of six matches head coach Sally Baum's Gophers are slated to play during the fall portion of their 2011-12 schedule, they had the Yellow Jackets (0-2) down 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play. At No. 1, junior Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and freshman Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples) recorded an 8-1 win over Rebeka Reyes and Markie Gustafson; at No. 2, freshmen Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) turned back Jessica Kody and Kelsey Diesel, 8-0.
Lee, Lin, Walsh and Turner were responsible for four of Goucher's six wins during the singles competition: Lee downed Reyes 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, Lin blanked Gustafson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Walsh came out on top of Alyssa Daniel 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Turner disposed of Ellen Limback 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4.
Senior Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) was stationed at No. 5 in Goucher's singles lineup and defeated Diesel 7-5, 6-0. By that same score, junior Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) was victorious against Madison DuBrock at No. 6 for the Gophers (1-0).
The only match that didn't go Goucher's way was No. 3 doubles where Casey and Zick bowed to DuBrock and Limback, 8-3.
