Today's Sweep Boosts 2011-12 Record in Singles Play to 21-3
TOWSON, Md. — Playing at home for the first time in 2011-12, Goucher won all six singles matches in straight sets this afternoon in registering a 9-0 triumph over Neumann.
Junior Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) picked up her third singles win of the young season by knocking off Neumann's Breanne Klar 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1, but a pair of freshmen stayed one victory ahead of Lee as each one improved to 4-0: Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), who pinned a 6-0, 6-1 setback on Susan Staiber at No. 2, and Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples), who defeated Teresa Kozin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
Freshman Lindsey Libaw (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gabrielle Porcelli at No. 3, while senior Ilana Gross (Cornwall, N.Y./The Storm King School) and sophomore Hanora Barron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) were in Goucher's singles lineup for the first time this season: Gross polished off Chyann Howard 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Barron came out on top of Kathleen Blaine 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Gophers (4-0) are now 21-3 in singles play in 2011-12.
The Knights (2-4) also came up empty in the doubles competition. Lee and Libaw breezed past Klar and Staiber, 8-0, at No. 1, Lin and Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) improved to 4-0 as a doubles pairing by combining for an 8-6 victory over Porcelli and Kozin at No. 2, and Walsh and Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) blasted Howard and Blaine, 8-1, at No. 3.
