Gross/Ruff Wind Up in Third Place in Flight II Doubles Bracket
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) won all three of her matches on the way to a first-place finish in Flight II of the singles competition at the Goucher Open.
The freshman defeated Jessica Scarpello from Gwynedd Mercy 6-0, 6-1 in today's championship match. She made it to the finals with a pair of wins on Saturday: 6-0, 6-2 over Lauren Rose from Stevenson in the opening round and 6-1, 6-4 over Stephanie Cattron from Penn St. Behrend in the semifinals.
Lin is now 7-0 in singles play in 2011-12.
Another freshman was the only other Goucher player to prevail in her opening-round singles match: Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends), competing in Flight III, followed up a 6-4, 6-0 victory over McDaniel's Laura Pollard by bowing to Emily Stumpfig from St. Mary's (Md.) 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. Turner was beaten out for third place by Moravian's Sophia Osbourne 8-7 (4) and had to settle for fourth.
Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) bounced back from a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy's Rachel Fein in the opening round of Flight I to win a pair of consolation matches and finish in fifth place. Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) downed McDaniel's Ashley Manning 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals as she wound up in sixth place in Flight IV.
In doubles, Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Hanora Barron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) placed sixth in Flight I and Ilana Gross (Cornwall, N.Y./The Storm King School) and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) were third in Flight II.
In today's match that determined the third- and fourth-place finishers in Flight II, Gross and Ruff prevailed over Alyssa Flowers and Sarah Sadtler from Moravian, 8-5.
