Casey, Gross Pick Up Points for Goucher in Singles Play
DALLAS, Pa. — Goucher's season-long winning streak came to an end today when the Gophers came up short in a tightly-contested match with Misericordia. The Gophers could come up with only one win in doubles play and prevailed in just two of the six singles matches in bowing to the Cougars, 6-3.
Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) prevailed at No. 1 for Goucher, but their 9-7 triumph over Michelle Cameron and Breanne Phillips provided the Gophers (4-1) with their only point during the doubles competition.
At No. 2, Misericordia's Emily Boro and Cassie Foy bested Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Alexandra Walsh (Greens Farms, Conn./Staples), 9-8 (6); at No. 3, Emily Hullings and Kat Hopkins were 8-6 winners over Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) and Ilana Gross (Cornwall, N.Y./The Storm King School).
Cameron and Phillips were both able to bounce back in singles play and pocket crucial wins for the Cougars (3-1): Cameron knocked off Lee 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 1 and Phillips rallied from being down a set to get past Lin 5-7, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (11-9) at No. 2.
The loss was Lin's first in eight singles matches so far in 2011-12.
Goucher picked up its two points during the singles competition at No. 5 where Casey polished off Hullings 6-2, 6-1 and at No. 6 where Gross topped Katie Moran 6-1, 6-1.
