Lee's Thrilling Three-Set Win at No. 2 Completes Comeback
BALTIMORE, Md. — Goucher handed Moravian its first loss of the 2012-13 season by overcoming a 2-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles play to earn a 5-4 triumph over the Greyhounds.
The match was moved indoors to the Bare Hills Racquet & Fitness Club because of the forecast for wet weather throughout the day. It was the only one of the three Landmark Conference women's tennis matches scheduled for today that wasn't postponed.
The Greyhounds (7-1, 0-1 Landmark) picked up a point when Olivia Sonnabend and Katie Zien held on for an 8-6 win over Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) at No. 2, but by the same score, Goucher's Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) defeated Brittany Hodge and Courtnie Lambert at No. 3.
Which team was ahead 2-1 going into singles play came down to the outcome at No. 1 doubles, which turned out to be a hotly contested battle between Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) of the Gophers and Melissa Follett and Erica Venuti of the Greyhounds. After 14 sets, the match was deadlocked at 7-7 and, following two additional sets, it was still tied, now at 8-8. In the tiebreaker, Follett and Venuti were the first to get to seven or more points and lead by at least two as they finished off Lin and Lee by a count of 10-8.
That meant for the Gophers (5-1, 1-0 Landmark) to prevail, they could drop, at most, two singles matches. One that went Moravian's way was No. 1 where Follett turned back Lin 6-4, 6-4.
Lee put the gut-wrenching loss at first doubles behind her as she went up against Zien at No. 2. The senior capain captured the first set by winning a tiebreaker, 7-2, and after dropping the middle set to Zien, she again found herself in another tiebreaker in the third set. Lee took the tiebreaker, 8-6, as she fought off three match points to register a 7-6 (2), 5-7, 7-6 (6) victory.
Walsh and Maxwell also earned crucial points for the Gophers by remaining undefeated in singles play this season. Walsh, competing at No. 3, was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Venuti, and Maxwell fought off Hodge 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4. Walsh improved to 8-0; Maxwell to 9-0.
Goucher's fourth win during the singles competition came
from Ruff at No. 6. She disposed off Sonnabend 6-2, 7-5
