SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Less than 36 hours after wrapping up a Landmark Conference match back home and then catching a flight out of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Goucher was out on the courts today for the first match of its Spring Break trip to this Caribbean island.
The Gophers can only hope the rest of their stay is as enjoyable as the outcome of today's match: an 8-1 victory over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
Because PR-Rio Peidras was down to five healthy players, the match was reduced to two contested doubles matches followed by five singles matches. The Gophers (6-1) prevailed in both of the contested doubles matches and added four more wins in singles play.
At No. 1 doubles, Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) turned back Alejandra Rodriguez and Mariana Munoz, 8-6. By that same score, Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) defeated Angelica Perez and Gabriella Barrios.
Lin polished off Perez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Walsh moved up to No. 2 for only the second time in 2012-13 and was tagged with her first loss of the season, 7-5, 6-4 to Rodriguez.
At No. 3, Maxwell remained unbeaten through 10 singles matches this season by rolling past Munoz 6-4, 6-1.
Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton), who would have gone for the Gophers at No. 3 doubles, did see action during the singles competition. Turner came out on top of Kiani Turgansa 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4; Ruff bested Barrios 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
"What they lacked in numbers, they made up for in tennis skills," Goucher head coach Sally Baum said of the Jerezanas. "That was a good, tough match for us to start off with down here and we responded by playing probably our most consistent match of the whole season. We seem to be getting a little bit better every day."
