Gophers Alone in First Place After Knocking Off Eagles, 7-2
HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Goucher went from being in a four-way tie for first place in the Landmark Conference at the beginning of the day to taking over sole possession of the top spot in the standings by virtue of its 7-2 victory over Juniata today.
Ruff Improves to 8-0 with Three-Set Win at No. 6 Singles
HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Goucher went from being in a four-way tie for first place in the Landmark Conference at the beginning of the day to taking over sole possession of the top spot in the standings by virtue of its 7-2 victory over Juniata today.
The Gophers (8-1, 2-0 Landmark) assumed control of the match right from the start by going 3-0 in doubles play. At No. 1, Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) posted an 8-5 win over Heather Waring and Megan Phillips; at No. 2, Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) turned back Tori Gray and Mitsuki Koh, 9-7.
Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) also earned a point for Goucher during the doubles competition as they defeated Jacklyn Renninger and Cara Stough, 8-3, at No. 3.
Ruff also secured a point for the Gophers during the singles competition as she kinocked off Yana Kohler 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 6. With the win, she improved to 8-0 in singles play in 2012-13.
Also winning for Goucher in singles play were Lin at No. 1 as she polished off Waring 6-0, 6-0, Lee at No. 2 where she recorded a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Phillips, and Maxwell, who come out on top of Stough 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 4.
The Eagles (7-2, 1-1 Landmark) secured one of their two points at No. 3 when Walsh, who was up 4-3 on Renninger after seven games, was forced to retire.
