Cianci Accounts for Goucher's Only Win in Singles Play
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. â Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) was victorious in the first singles match of her collegiate career, but the freshman's win at No. 5 was the only one Goucher could muster in singles play as the Gophers came up short against St. Mary's (Md.), 7-2, this afternoon.
In-State Rivals Pin 7-2 Setback on Visiting Gophers
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton), who made her first appearance of the season in Goucher's singles line-up against Frostburg St. just four days ago, was back there this afternoon and accounted for the only point the Gophers earned during the singles competition.
The freshman was also part of the only victory head coach Sally Baum's netters managed in doubles play.
Her efforts weren't enough to prevent Goucher from suffering a 7-2 loss to St. Mary"s (Md.)
The Seahawks (10-7) had already assumed a 2-0 lead by winning two doubles matches by the time Cianci and Hanora Barron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) came off the court following their 8-3 victory over Marie Rau and Emily Rost at No. 3. They also picked up the three points they needed in singles play to clinch their victory by the time Cianci put the finishing touches on her 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Rost at N0. 5.
Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) at No. 1, Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) at No. 2 and Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) at No. 4 all won the first set of their singles match, but not one of them could put their opponent away. Lee bowed to Shannon Ramsey 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2), Maxwell to Emily Stumpfig 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Ruff to Anna Passaniti 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
All three of the setbacks Goucher has been handed in 2012-13 have been to in-state opponents. The Gophers (8-3) bowed to Washington (Md.) back on March 2 and to Salisbury on March 30.
