Gophers Prevail in Rain-Shortened Match, 5-0
TOWSON, Md. — Seniors Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) prevailed in the only two singles matches that could be completed before rain started falling this afternoon during Goucher's season-opening match against Waynesburg.
Lee, Maxwell Pick Up 33rd Singles Wins at Goucher
TOWSON, Md. — Seniors Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) prevailed in the only two singles matches that could be completed before rain started falling this afternoon during Goucher's season-opening match against Waynesburg. But because those two victories provided the Gophers with an insurmountable 5-0 lead, head coach Sally Baum's squad was declared the winner.
Lee, who was stationed at No. 2 in Goucher's singles lineup, polished off Waynesburg's Alyssa Daniel 6-0, 6-0 to pick up the 33rd singles win of her career. Maxwell had also come out on top 32 times in singles play during her career heading into today's match where she was victorious over Markie Gustafson 6-1, 6-1.
The Gophers (1-0) led the overall match 3-0 at the conclusion of the doubles competition. The Yellow Jackets (1-2) went with Rachel Klemash and Daniel at No. 1, but they fell to Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Lee, 8-4.
The No. 2 doubles match pitted Maxwell and Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) against Waynesburg's Ellen Limback and Madison DuBrock. Maxwell and Walsh recored an 8-0 victory.
Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) were 8-5 winners over Sarah Reyes and Emily Meier at No. 3.
