BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher's Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech) picked up her 12th win in singles play this season and remained unbeaten at No. 1, but her victory over Moravian's top player along with the win she and teammate Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) achieved at first doubles accounted for the Gophers' only two points this afternoon in a 7-2 loss to the Greyhounds.
It was the opening Landmark Conference match of the season for both teams.
Bercovici improved to 7-0 at No. 1 singles with her 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Melissa Follett At No. 2, Brittney Eady was a 6-4, 7-6 (2) winner over Walsh.
Bercovici and Walsh joined forces for an 8-5 win over Follett and Erica Venuti at No. 1 doubles, but the Greyhounds (9-2, 1-0 Landmark) came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead.
Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) were at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in Goucher's singles line-up. Turner suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Katie Zien, while Cianci bowed to Venuti 6-3, 6-2.
This was Moravian's seventh victory over Goucher since the formation of the Landmark Conference, but it ended a streak of three consecutive 5-4 matches between the two teams. The Gophers defeated the Greyhounds by that score in 2010-11 and 2012-13, and lost to them by that score in 2011-12.
The Gophers (3-5, 0-1 Landmark) have eight days before they play their next Landmark Conference match against Scranton on March 23. Until then, they'll be training in Holton Head Island, S.C., where they will play five matches. The first two are on Tuesday against Albright (11:45 a.m.) and Frostburg St. (3:30 p.m.).
