NORFOLK, Va. — A 6-1, 6-3 victory by Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech) at No. 1 was one of five wins Goucher came up with in singles play today on the way to a convincing 7-2 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan.
By defeating Mia Proctor in straight sets, Bercovici, who is currently at No. 13 in the ITA Division III rankings for the Atlantic South Region, picked up her 12th win at the top spot in the Gophers' singles lineup and raised her overall record this season to 17-3.
At No. 2 singles, Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Hannah Parent.
Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton), Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) and Ryan Derham (San Anselmo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) were also victorious in singles play for the Gophers (7-8). Cianci downed Lisa Nguyen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Ruff didn't lose a game to Sydney Charity in her match at No. 5 and Derham knocked off Kaitlyn Rapozza 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Marlins (2-12) claimed their only point during singles play at No. 3.
The Gophers came out of the doubles competition with a 2-1 lead thanks to an 8-2 victory by Bercovici and Walsh over Parent and Marissa Cifuentes at No. 1 and an 8-3 triumph by Ruff and Hanora Barron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) over Charity and Rapozza at No. 3.
Next up for the Gophers is a non-conference match at Elizabethtown this Friday, beginning at 2 p.m.
