TOWSON, Md. — Goucher came out on top in five of the six singles matches today on the way to an 8-1 triumph over Waynesburg.
Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech), who set a new single-season school record in 2013-14 by winning 21 singles matches, prevailed at No. 1 today as she posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Waynesburg's Rachel Klemash. At No. 2, Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) defeated Alyssa Daniel 6-0, 6-0.
Those same four players were also involved in the No. 1 doubles match where Bercovici and Walsh topped Klemash and Daniel, 8-2.
Goucher's other wins during the singles competition were by Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) at No. 3, Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) at No. 4 and Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) at No. 5. Ruff polished off Emily McDonold 6-1, 6-1, Turner turned back Ellen Limback 6-2, 6-3, and Goldstein Plesser put away Madison DuBrock 6-2, 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets (2-1) earned their only point at No. 6 singles where Lauren Cowden downed Claire Donnelly (Frederick, Md./Frederick) 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
This is the first of four matches for head coach Sally Baum's Gophers (1-0) during the fall portion of their 2014-15 schedule. The next will be against Penn St.-Harrisburg on September 17 at 3:30 p.m.
