YORK, Pa. — Amber Penaloza (Damascus, Md./Damascus) was the only Goucher player to win a set during singles play as the Gophers took a 9-0 hit from York this afternoon in the season-opening match for both teams.
Penaloza took the first set against York's Elizabeth Wiley at No. 6, but thanks to a 7-4 win in a tiebreaker, Wiley evened the match at a set apiece. Wiley also prevailed in a super tiebreaker to complete her 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (4) victory over Penaloza.
The win that sewed up the overall match for the Spartans (1-0) was earned by Katie Wagner, who faced Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) at No. 1. After not winning a game in the first set, Goldstein-Plesser offered a bigger challenge in the second as Wagner came out on top 6-0, 6-4.
Wagner and Darian Naill recorded an 8-3 win over Goldstein-Plesser and Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) at No. 1 doubles.
Following the 2015 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships that run from September 26-28, the Gophers (0-1) will play their first home match of the season against Penn St.-Harrisburg on September 30 at 3 p.m.
