Goucher Women's Tennis Falls At Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson College defeats Goucher College 6-3 in non-conference women's tennis action on Saturday.

"We did what we set out to to today and that was compete for every point," said head coach Steve Baum. "This is one of the best outings we've had against Dickinson and we made great steps forward in regards to our mental game."

The Gophers got victories at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles including freshman Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) starting her collegiate career 2-0. McCaffrey won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2 while it took Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) three sets to dispense her opponent at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0.

Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) took her first set to a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles before falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 while Kyoko Kinoshita (Tokyo, Japan/Tilton School [N.H]) fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Sara Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

"That's what the fall is all about, making sure that we challenge ourselves to be better so that when the big moments come in the spring, we know that we are ready to handle them," said the second-year head coach.

Gill-Mpofu and Marzerka-McCaffrey both lost 8-4 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles while Kinoshita and Healy dropped their No. 3 doubles match, 8-3.

Goucher returns to action when the team hosts the Goucher Invitational on September 28-29.
