TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College followed strong play from the middle singles to surive in the season opener 5-4 against Rutgers Camden Saturday at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
- Goucher (1-0) dropped two of three doubles matches before rebounding back in singles play.
- Shelby Meek (Halethorpe, MD/Catonsville) and Aaliyah Ybarra (Bastrop, TX/Cedar Creek) won their doubles match 8-0
- Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and Jessica Townes (Wilmington, DE/Concord) dropped their match 8-5 at No. 1.
- Natalia Navarro (Francisco Morazan, Honduras / Del Campo School) and Eliza Abady (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / The Masters School) dropped their match 8-2
- Three of Goucher's singles wins came in straight sets.
- McCaffrey dropped 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Abady went 7-5, 5-7, before dropping the tie breaker 3-10 at No. 3.
- Sarai Oquendo Silveira (Houston, Texas / Harmony School of Discovery) won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5.
- Navarro was victorious at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-2 count, while Townes cameback 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 to win at No. 4.
- Ybarra posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
- Goucher moves to 1-0 to open the season
- Goucher returns to action Monday, traveling to York (Pa.) in a 3:30pm non-conference match.
