Benedict Wins Third Set Thriller Against Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Goucher College women's tennis team (0-3 overall) traveled across the bridge to face the Shorewomen of Washington College (MD) (4-2 overall). Despite the strong performance by first-year Alexa Benedict, the Gophers were not able to overcome the Shorewomen in a 6-1 loss.

The doubles point was secured by the Shorewomen, with the No. 1 team of Natalia Navarro and Meline Siggen falling 3-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Lucy Ingraham and Benedict won the set, but still fell 1-6. Lydia Hurst and Kendra Lanese made up the No. 3 team, which fell 0-6. 

Benedict won the lone point for the Gophers in the No. 4 singles match after winning the first set 6-2, dropping the second, 2-6, and finally winning the third in a tight tie-breaker 1-0 (17-15). Navarro fell in the No. 1 match after a close first set (4-6, 0-6). Siggen remained competitive in the No. 2 singles match, falling 4-6, and 3-6. In the No. 3 singles, Ingraham fell 3-6, 0-6. Hurst and Lanese fell in straight sets (0-6, 0-6) in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. 

The Gophers are back in action on Saturday, Mar. 7th at St. Mary's (MD), set to begin at 1pm. The team returns home on Monday, Mar. 9th, for a matchup against Methodist set for a 3pm start.
