Third Place in Shot Put Belongs to Cooney
New Indoor School Records Set in 4 x 200, 4 x 400 Relays
February 28, 2009
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Goucher's Abby Cooney (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) placed third in the shot put competition today at the 2009 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Cooney, who finished in 10th place in the same event as a freshman at last year's conference meet, bested all but two of her competitors with a toss of 34-feet, 2.25-inches, which is over six feet better than her former personal best in the indoor shot put.
Goucher's entries in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400-meter relays both finished in fourth place – and both set new school records. Sheba Newman-Blount (Lanham, Md./Bishop Ireton), Caitlin Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland), Kanika Staten (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Dana Macaluso (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) posted a combined time of 1:53.80 in the 4 x 200.
The same four runners made up Goucher's 4 x 400, which was clocked at 4:23.38.
In the distance medley relay, Goucher took fifth place (15:29.36).
After Cooney's third-place effort in the shot put, the next highest finishes for Goucher in an individual event were sixth place by Macaluso in the long jump (15-feet, 7.75-inches) and Newman-Blount in the triple jump (33-feet, 0.75-inches).
Macaluso also placed eighth in the 400-meter run, but her time of 1:04.21 ranks as the second-fastest in the history of Goucher's indoor track and field program.
With a team score of 18 points, Goucher finished in fifth place in the final standings. Moravian captured the 2009 Landmark title by earning a total of 245 points.
