TOWSON, MD — Goucher's Sheba Newman-Blount
(Lanham, MD/Bishop Ireton) placed first in three
individual events and new school records were set in the 800-meter
run and 4 x 400-meter relay at today's Goucher College Track &
Field Classic.
Newman-Blount crossed the finish line first in the 100-meter dash
and 400-meter hurdles, completing those events in :13.63 and
:69.83, respectively, plus her effort of 15-feet, 9.5-inches in the
long jump earned her first place in that event.
Goucher's only other first-place performance was turned in by
Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) in
the 1,500-meter run. Her winning time of 5:05.72 ranks as the
second-fastest all-time in that event in the history of Goucher's
women's track and field program.
Rachel Boss (Keene, NH/Keene) and Marisa
Long (Hampton Bays, NY/Sachem) both broke the former
school record in the 800. The new mark belongs to Boss, who placed
second with her time of 2:26.93. Long (2:28.01) finished third.
In the 4 x 400, Goucher's team of Boss, Amy McLellan
(Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional), Long and Coles placed
second behind McDaniel and broke the school record with its time of
4:20.04.
McLellan was runner-up in two events: 200-meter dash and 400-meter
dash. Her time of :62.77 in the 400 makes her the second-fastest
individual in that event in program history.
The Gophers achieved a team score of 113.5 to finish in fourth
place.
