Newman-Blount Earns Points in Three Individual Events

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Dayna Mizzer (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) and Abby Cooney (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) both earned all-conference honors while competing for Goucher this weekend at the inaugural Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Both were awarded second-team All-Landmark Conference recognition as the result of second-place performances. For Mizzer, it was in the heptathlon; for Cooney, the hammer throw.

Mizzer completed the six-event competition with 3,122 points, the highest score ever recorded in the history of Goucher's women's track and field program. She finished as runner-up to Susquehanna's Robin O'Hara, who scored 3,673 points.

Mizzer also placed seventh overall in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in :16.96.

Cooney's best effort in the hammer throw was 117-feet, just four inches behind the champion, Susquehanna's Ashley Moormann. Cooney also placed sixth in the discus throw (84-feet, 9-inches).

In all, Goucher earned a total of 58.5 points in 14 events in finish in fifth place in the overall team standings.

In addition to the runner-up performances by Mizzer and Cooney, Goucher produced the third-place finishers in two individual events and one relay. J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 13:21.56 and Sheba Newman-Blount (Lanham, MD/Bishop Ireton) crossed the finish line in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.33, both in third place. Newman-Blount's time is also a new school record.

Goucher's 4 x 400-meter relay of Newman-Blount, Mizzer, Coles and Dana Macaluso (Huntington, NY/Huntington) placed third in 4:15.53 and the 4 x 100 unit of Newman-Blount, Mizzer, Catherine Abbondanza (Yarmouth, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) and Macaluso was fourth (:52.10).

Newman-Blount and Macaluso both secured points for Goucher in the triple jump where Newman-Blount placed sixth (32-feet, 7.5-inches), one spot ahead of Macaluso (30-feet, 10.25-inches).

Newman-Blount also placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, completing the event in :13.19.

Macaluso broke the school record in the 200-meter dash with her time of :26.80 during the trials. In the finals, she turned in a time of :26.81 to place fifth. The freshman also wound up in eighth place in the long jump (16-feet, 7.25-inches).

Abbondanza placed eighth in the javelin throw (97-feet, 2-inches) and Kate Young (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) finished eighth in the 5,000-meter run (20:33.10).
