Newman-Blount, Cooney Turn In First-Place Efforts

GRANTHAM, Pa. – First-place performances by Sheba
Newman-Blount (Lanham, Md./Bishop Ireton) in the 400-meter
hurdles and Abby Cooney (Holden, Mass./Wachusett
Regional) in the hammer throw helped Goucher finish in
seventh place today at the Messiah Invitational.
Newman-Blount crossed the finish line in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.42, exactly one second ahead of runner-up Abbey Glenzel from Messiah. Cooney took top honors in the hammer throw with an effort of 116-feet, 9-inches.
Cooney also earned points for the Gophers in two other events by placing fifth in the shot put (32-feet, 11.25-inches) and seventh in the discus throw (88-feet, 8-inches). Kayla Prince (Randallstown, Md./Yeshivat Rambam) also scored for Goucher in the hammer with a throw of 69-feet, 10-inches, good for eighth place.
Dana Macaluso (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) also secured points for Goucher in three individual events: for placing second in the long jump (15-feet, 6.25-inches) and seventh in both the 200-meter dash (:27.35) and the 400-meter run (1:04.98).
Goucher's entry of Newman-Blount, Caitlin Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland), Kanika Staten (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Macaluso took third place in the 4 x 400-meter relay.
Goucher concluded the meet with a team score of 45 points to finish ahead of both Gettysburg (8 points) and Johns Hopkins (8). Messiah wound up in first place with a team score of 251 points.
