Gophers Find Success at Season-Opening Meet

LEXINGTON, Va. — Goucher made strides at the Washington & Lee Carnival, a two-day season-opening event, as the team gathered five top-10 finishes.
Teammates Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Preparatory School) and Monique Welch (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) placed within the top-10 in the 100-meter dash. Belin notched a seventh-place finish (:13.44) while Welch placed 10th overall with a time of :13.59.
Laura Williams (Verona, N.J./Verona) finished ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (:17.75) and Danielle Granger (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) placed fifth with a clocked time of 1:14.74 in the 400 hurdles.
Kamillah Smith (Northampton, Mass./Amherst Regional), Belin, Welch and Williams joined forces in the 4 x 100-meter relay. The foursome wound up finishing fifth with a combined time of :51.47 seconds, good for third-fastest clocking in that event in the history of Goucher's women's outdoor track and field program.
There was no team scoring in the meet.
The Gophers won't have to travel for their next meet, the Goucher Track & Field Classic, which takes place one week from today.
