October 31, 2006

ARLINGTON, VA — Goucher went out in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament for the ninth straight year when top-seeded Marymount turned back the Gophers, 3-0, tonight.

Game scores were 30-14, 30-18, 30-19.

The last time the Gophers were victorious in the tournament's opening round was in 1997 when they defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 3-0 (15-5, 17-15, 15-2).

The Saints (23-8) were never seriously threatened in either of the first two games on tonight's match, but in the third game, the Gophers (16-14) trailed by only a point as late as 14-13.

Leaders for Marymount were Lauren Gay with 15 kills, Julia Ralston with 19 digs and Bea Livioco with 38 assists.

Megan Smith (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) supplied the Gophers with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Despite the loss, Goucher finished a season with a winning record for the first time since the 1998 squad went 21-16.
