WESTMINSTER, Md. – Having already prevailed in two of the first three sets, Goucher seemed on the verge of putting away McDaniel for the first time since 1997 tonight when the Gophers assumed a 22-20 lead in the fourth set.
The Green Terror, however, battled back, reeling off five unanswered points to even the match between the two in-state rivals at 2-2.
In the fifth set, the Gophers were able to open up an 11-7 advantage only to watch McDaniel rally and complete a 25-19, 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14 triumph.
The Green Terror (5-3) took a 14-13 lead in the fifth set on a kill by Taylor Hergott, but the Gophers (1-7) stayed alive by winning the next point with a kill by Catie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca). A service error provided McDaniel with a second match point, and this time Hergott's team-leading 23rd kill brought an end to the match.
Megan Smith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Long Beach Polytechnic) supplied the Gophers with a season-high 25 kills and 18 digs. Ditmore finished with 11 kills and 14 digs.
Two Goucher players established new career-high totals in the five-set match: Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Dehli, India/American Embasssy School) with her 49 assists and Rebecca Schaefer (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) with her 23 digs.
The win was McDaniel's eighth straight in the all-time series between the two schools. Goucher's last victory over the Green Terror took place on Sept. 16, 1997.
