Gophers Avoid 0-3 Start by Shocking Royals

But they stayed alive by winning a close third set and then dominated the fourth set before finishing off the Royals in the decisive fifth set.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher appeared headed for an 0-3 start in the Landmark Conference when the Gophers dropped the first two sets in a best-of-five match against Scranton today. But they stayed alive by winning a close third set and then dominated the fourth set before finishing off the Royals in the decisive fifth set.
Set scores were 20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-6.
On Saturday, head coach Michael Bossom's Gophers bowed to Juniata, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-19), and Catholic, 3-1 (27-29, 25-20, 25-19, 25-19), in a pair of Landmark Conference matches.
Against the Royals (9-10, 1-2 Landmark), senior opposite hitter Kasey Quinn (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded 17 kills and 16 digs, and her .241 attack percentage was the highest for a Goucher player in any match this season in which the player had a minimum of 12 kills. Sophmore middle hitter Sabina Smajlovic (Hartford, Conn./Miss Porter's School) and freshman middle hitter Addie Lanzarotta (Culver City, Calif./Culver City) both had four of the season-high total of 10 blocks the Gophers executed in the match.
In losing to the Eagles (16-1, 1-0 Landmark), the Gophers were limited to 16 kills the entire match and finished with a -.021 attack percentage.
The Gophers captured the first set against Catholic, but the Cardinals (10-7, 2-0 Landmark) roared back to take the next three and extend their winning streak against Goucher in the sport of volleyball to 14 matches.
Chalk's 18 kills and Smajlovic's five blocks against Catholic were both season-high totals for a Goucher player this season. Senior setter Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Delhi, India/American Embassy School) was credited with 41 assists and freshman libero Victoria Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with 25 digs in the four-set match.
